The Third Theatre
This major collection is Robert Brustein's first book since his appointment as Dean of the Yale School of Drama and his transformation of that school into one of the most important theatre institutions in the country. It contains his controversial essays proclaiming the once-promising third theatre "a theatre of naked slogans and raw emotionalism," documents his involvement with the "new" theatre of Off-Off-broadway, and discusses the range of today's theatre from Lincoln Center to the Broadway of Arthur Miller to the Off-Broadway of Futz, to the current foreign and domestic acting companies. Finally, it includes a group of Brustein's most famous non-theatre essays : on the Madison Avenue Villain, on horror movies, on the supposed death of the novel.
