Jurnal Sastra Inggris: Language vulnerability and the new man: a discourse analysis of emotional masculinity in @menungsa.id
This study aims to analyze how the Instagram account @Menungsa.id actively reconstructs the discourse of masculinity in the Indonesian digital sphere, shifting traditional norms that demand strength and dominance toward a model that emphasizes vulnerability, recovery, and mental well-being. The research data were collected from @Menungsa.id's Instagram captions over a one-year period, from June 2024 to June 2025. The methodology applied is Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), supported by corpus analysis using AntConc software to identify lexical patterns and narrative strategies. The findings reveal the deliberate and empathetic use of linguistic strategies through dominant keywords such as "laki" (man), "mental" (mental), "ruang aman" (safe space), and "mengobrol" (chatting) as well as the alternation of the pronouns "kita" (we) and "kami" (us), which effectively build emotional solidarity and challenge the cultural narrative that "men don't talk." In conclusion, @Menungsa.id functions as a transformative agent that successfully normalizes men's emotional vulnerability, demonstrating that digital media serves as a crucial arena for renegotiating gender identity and as a catalyst for more inclusive social change.
